You may have noticed, poking around my lovely place here, that I have middle grade fantasy and cozy mysteries floating around. So, why would I bother starting with another genre? Am I just writing romance for commercial reasons?
The short answer is no.
And now I’ll give you the long twisted version of why I’m writing in this newest genre and the origin story of how we got here.
The real reason I’m writing Holiday RomComs
I love watching people fall in love. I watch the embarrassing, cringe-y, and sometimes lame, Hallmark movies like they’re candy, or potato chips. I read romcoms in the same way. They refill me creative well, my faith in the human race, and there is a certain excitement when someone is finding their person (whether they be fictional or in real life). I love love.
For many years, I just read and watched these candy-like pieces of content without trying my hand at it. Honestly, I wasn’t sure I would be any good at it, but that’s what I said about cozy mysteries too.
Then one day I was having a conversation with one of my author friends about a situation with one of my family members. I was explaining about how clumsy me and my family are, including this family member, and I described a scene I imagined happening and it became the meet-cute for a book that I hadn’t even had on my radar.
First, I tried to put it in the next cozy mystery series I was writing. That didn’t fit. Then I realized it was going to have to be a romcom. But not just any romcom, because the town that this romance needed to take place was called, Snowflake Falls and it was a Christmas town. Hence, the specificity of Holiday RomCom.
Here’s something you may not know about me, I am a Christmas obsessed woman. I have been since I was little. I believed in Santa until I was twelve. I still believe in the magic of Christmas and it has very little to do with presents or the commercialism of Christmas.
For me, it’s the music, not just the old traditional songs either. I love listening to new Christmas music and I have an extensive Christmas playlist that I listen to in December, but also in April, June, September, anytime I need a mood booster. Sometimes I use the playlist to help me clean.
I’m also a sucker for Christmas lights, they are where the magic really feels like it comes alive. I love the night sky with Christmas lights.
I love peppermint mochas, hot cocoa, baking and feeding other people. I love giving people homemade presents or finding the thing that someone will really appreciate.
So, the idea of a town that celebrates Christmas big, is really exciting for me.
Also, Snowflake Falls is going to be the backdrop for multiple trilogies so we’ll get to see different aspects of the town and how they celebrate. We’ll get to see characters that have yet to get their happily ever afters and check in on those that already have. It’s going to be so much fun!
